Birmingham took on the Union Club of Soho on Thursday 11th March in a challenge match. Both teams had 15 players and everyone played two 7-point matches which were drawn at random. Needless to say it was a very exciting match. Things were very close after round 1 with Birmingham holding a slender 8-7 advantage. Birmingham then streaked ahead reaching 15 wins with 3 matches left to play. At one point the Brummies were ahead in all three but Union then turned things around for a nail biting finish...
The score reached 15-14 to Birmingham meaning everything rode on the final match - a win for Michele De Havilland (Dehula) would seal things for Birmingham while Brenda (Springbee) was hoping to win to salvage a draw for the Union club. With the match score at 6-6 and Michele well down in the race, things were looking bleak for Brum, but the match went to the very last roll thanks to an amazing double 5 from Michele. Brenda couldn't roll the final double to take off her last four checkers and Birmingham ran out 16-14 winners.
