Birmingham Backgammon Club League Rules – Season 1 2024
The season
The league season runs from 15th January 2024 until 3rd June 2024. This deadline will not be altered and all matches must be completed within this timeframe.
Membership and number of matches
The members of the league play each other once, which can be arranged at any time during the season, at any place to suit the players. Matches should be arranged between the players - live where possible and online where necessary. We recommend online play using the Backgammon Studio Heroes site for online play. A site user guide written by David Sanders is available here
It is the responsibility of each player to ensure completion of his/her fixtures in the allotted time.
All league matches are 9 points in length.
If a new member wishes to join the league after it has started, this is at the discretion of the League Director.
League placings
Two points are scored for a win and one point for a loss. Zero points are awarded for un-played fixtures. If two or more players are equal on league points on completion of the divisional matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings (in descending order):
Promotion and relegation
In all divisions except division 1, the top two finishing players will be promoted to the next division for the following season. In all divisions, the bottom two finishing players will be relegated one division for the following season. The winner of Division 1 in Season 2 may also gain entry into the UK Backgammon Champions' League. Retirements or defaults through non-played matches may affect this at the league director's discretion. The formation of the divisions may change between seasons at the league director's discretion depending on the number of entries. Changes will only be made to evolve the competition to everyone's benefit.
Rules
As we are a club affiliated with the UKBGF, we will adopt their normal tournament rules,

Please note that all leagues are ‘clock Preference’. This means that either player may insist that a clock is used if one is available. The standard time settings of 2 mins timebank per match point and 12sec delay should be used.
Any player completing less than half of their matches without a good and accepted reason will be relegated regardless of their finishing position.
No shows - two strikes and you're out. If you do not turn up for two matches that you've pre-arranged (any two matches, not necessarily against the same opponent) without providing a reason or contacting your opponent, then you will take no further part in the league. By taking part you commit to playing all of your matches.
Reporting of results
Results must be reported to the League Director and are only deemed to be results when they have been recorded by him / her. BOTH players should report results (including the match score). Any player querying a result or score more than seven days after the event will only effect an alteration with the consent of his/her opponent.
Entry fees and prizes
For all leagues the entry fee is £5 per season. A proportion of this fee goes towards the purchase of trophies and the remainder is returned as prize money. Division winners and runners-up will receive a cash prize and a trophy.
There will also be an optional £10 side-pool. This will be split 70% - 30% to the two highest placed side-pool entrants in each league.
This fee should be paid in full by the start of the league, unless agreement has been given the league director.
Match results will be added to the appropriate UKBGF online ratings system. Results will be batch uploaded at most twice per season.
