The 6th annual Birmingham Open was held on Saturday 13th May in Moseley, Birmingham.
This year Mike Wood, the Tournament Director, expanded the Tournament from its traditional format of a 32 player knockout. After a high level of early demand for places Mike decided to go for a field of 48. Everyone played four 5-point matches in a “Swiss” system to produce 15 players with three or four wins. One lucky player with only two wins was drawn from a hat to produce a sixteen player Main knockout. The remaining players competed for a “Consolation” and a progressive “Last Chance”. Thus every single entrant was guaranteed a minimum of six matches.
Mike’s vision for this Tournament has always been to emphasise the social as well as the competitive. He produced an excellent buffet providing plenty for everyone from midday to close of play. The day was as notable for the many animated discussions between old friends catching up over a beer or coffee, as it was for the high quality and competitive Backgammon. We saw the usual mix of local players from Birmingham, Coventry, Leamington, Warwick and Worcester, together with those travelling from further afield, including London, Manchester, Kent, Bristol and Florida! Marc Turner from Coventry took the Open title, overcoming tough resistance from London’s Anna Price in the final.
St Albans’ Sean Clennell (left) won the Consolation after a very hard fought final against Jamie MacPherson (right) who plays in Sean Jones’ Worcester League.
The Last Chance was won by Birmingham’s own Richard Carter, seen here (left) receiving his trophy from Tournament Director, Mike Wood (right).
The Last Chance runner-up was Przemyslaw Nadziejko, who I believe is also from the Birmingham area. The Tournament was also notable for each of the three Finals finishing within a 15 minute window! An excellent day out, very well directed by Mike Wood. Thanks are also due to Rose Pfeffer-Ward for helping the catering flow smoothly on the day. Kev Jones has very kindly undertaken the task of submitting all the results for the UKBGF ratings.
The Birmingham Open is an annual tournament hosted by Birmingham Backgammon Club and organised and administered by Mike Wood.
The initial tournament was held in May 2012 and attracted players from around the UK. Since then it has continued to grow in popularity, not least because of the friendly atmosphere, and fantastic buffet provided by Mike.
